Every small business website in India that isn't converting visitors into enquiries or customers has the same problem, not one big problem, but usually three to five smaller ones stacked on top of each other. Each one alone might not be enough to turn a visitor away. Together, they silently kill your conversion rate.
After reviewing dozens of small business websites across India, we've identified the issues that come up again and again. If your website isn't generating leads or enquiries, at least three of these are almost certainly present on yours.
Problem 1: Your Website Loads Too Slowly
In India, where a significant portion of website traffic comes from mobile devices on 4G or even slower connections, page load speed is critical. Google's research shows that 53% of mobile visitors leave a page that takes more than 3 seconds to load. Most small business websites in India take 6-12 seconds to load on mobile.
What causes this:
- Uncompressed images, a single photo from a phone camera can be 4-8 MB when it should be under 200 KB for web use
- Cheap shared hosting that throttles resources
- Too many plugins on WordPress sites, each adding its own scripts
- No caching or CDN set up
Quick fixes:
- Compress all images using Squoosh (free, browser-based) before uploading, aim for under 200 KB per image
- Use a caching plugin on WordPress (WP Rocket or WP Super Cache)
- Test your current speed at PageSpeed Insights and fix whatever it flags as Critical
"A one-second improvement in load time increases conversions by up to 7%. For a small business getting 500 visitors a month, fixing your site speed can mean 35 more enquiries."
Problem 2: It Doesn't Work Properly on Mobile
More than 75% of Indian web traffic comes from mobile phones. Yet many small business websites were designed primarily for desktop and are only technically "mobile responsive", meaning they technically work on mobile, but the experience is poor: text is too small, buttons are too close together, forms are hard to fill out, and navigation is frustrating.
Check these on your phone right now:
- Can you read the text without zooming in?
- Can you tap the phone number or WhatsApp link directly from the website?
- Is the contact form easy to fill on a touchscreen keyboard?
- Does the navigation menu work on mobile or does it cover the content?
- Do images load quickly, or is the page blank while waiting?
If any of these are a problem, your website is losing mobile visitors, which is likely most of your visitors.
Problem 3: No Clear Call to Action
This is the most common problem we see. Many small business websites in India look fine on the surface, they have good content, decent design, and show the services offered. But when a visitor is ready to take the next step, there's no obvious path forward.
Every page of your website needs to answer the question: "What should I do next?"
What a good CTA looks like:
- A prominent button that says exactly what happens when you click it: "Get a Free Quote", "WhatsApp Us Now", "Book a Call", "See Our Packages"
- Present on every page, not just the home page
- Visible without scrolling on mobile (above the fold)
- Different from your navigation menu, a CTA is action-oriented, nav is for exploration

In India, many people are cautious about enquiring with a business they find online, especially if the business is small and they've never heard of it before. Your website needs to give visitors reasons to trust you before they send their details or call you.
Trust signals that work:
- Real photos, photos of your actual team, workspace, products, or past work. Not stock photos. Real photos build instant trust.
- Google Reviews, embed your Google review rating and count prominently. If you have good reviews, show them.
- Client logos, if you've worked with recognisable businesses, show their logos
- Specific numbers, "150+ projects delivered" is more credible than "years of experience"
- Business registration / GST number, shows you're a legitimate, registered business
- Clear contact details, a phone number, WhatsApp link, and physical address (even a general city) make you feel real and reachable
Problem 5: Nobody Can Find You on Google
Having a website that nobody visits is like opening a shop in a location with no foot traffic and no signage. For most small businesses in India, Google search is still the primary way new customers discover you online.
Basic SEO that every small business website must have:
- A unique title tag on every page that includes your main service and location (e.g., "Graphic Design Studio in Pune | Vistrix Studio")
- A meta description on every page that makes someone want to click
- Your city and service area mentioned naturally in your homepage content
- A fully completed and verified Google Business Profile, this is the single highest-impact SEO action for local businesses
- At least one blog article per month answering a question your customers commonly ask
"Most small businesses in India don't need a complex SEO strategy. They need the basics done properly and consistently. That alone puts them ahead of 80% of competitors."
Fix One Thing at a Time
Don't try to fix everything at once. Start with speed, run your site through PageSpeed Insights and fix the top two or three issues it identifies. Then check your mobile experience. Then add a clear CTA to every page. These three changes alone will meaningfully improve your conversion rate.
